Human beings react in different ways during a crisis, similar to how each of us react differently to death. Such events bring out the best and worst in us. More so when facing multiple crises. We can see this with COVID and the Ukraine conflict.
Yet, what of the threat of extinction? COVID does not threaten human existence, but there have been a half-billion cases and six million deaths worldwide. All this from an invisible enemy. Counterintuitively, it seems that only China has contained it, quite a feat for a nation that was demonized for supposedly intentionally spreading it worldwide by the former US president.
However war between nuclear-armed nations absolutely threatens human existence, especially when crazy people are at the helm of nations. The former US president easily fits that category, whereas Russia’s Putin probably qualifies also, not due to mental imbalance, but rather, due to an ego-maniacal lust for power.
Nuclear weapons have probably not been used, only because those surrounding these two were/are most likely, a little saner, not willing to be complicit in humanity’s destruction. Both incidentally have made such threats.
But what about extinction via climate change? Despite the overwhelming evidence, many of the madman’s followers continue to believe that magically, a great reversal will somehow take place via nature cleansing itself. Or that there will be an extinction in which only the faithful or the strong will survive.
We are all entitled to our beliefs and this dictum is on full display during these times. In a different era, we would all be shocked by the nonsensical beliefs that have seemingly become the political norm nowadays. One expects whack ideas from the Orange madman, but they aren’t limited to him and his followers.
In these seemingly confusing times, it is a safe bet that if the madman is for it, then the saner segment of society is against it. This is not always the safest logic because one could also find oneself on the same side as war-mongers that illegally invaded Iraq. But in this case, after giving Putin comfort by showering effusive praise on him, the madman “hinted” that the use of nuclear weapons can end the invasion. Regardless, he still signals admiration for Putin. That easily explains why many of his minions also support the invasion.
Despite this, some people have made the mind-numbing claim that Putin is a worldwide peacemaker. Others invoke the idea that the United States has carried out [at least] 33 invasions since WWII - therefore Russia is also entitled to 33 of its own? The apologia has come from unexpected quarters, though at least they are in the minority.
It is virtually the same equation when it comes to climate change. The UN recently issued a report stating that the weather is about to get much worse and much deadlier, especially within 18 years. Forest fires will become worse, so too extreme heat, floods, drought and resultant hunger and deadlier illnesses, affecting the poorest and the most vulnerable, though affecting the whole planet and all of humanity.
And yet, members of the flat Earth society, most of them members of the GOP, and the madman’s fanatical supporters, continue to believe that climate change is but a hoax.
And then there’s COVID, which has become primarily a blue or Republican disease. That is, counties that voted for the madman have been the hardest hit by COVID, primarily because vaccine hesitancy is highest among his supporters, especially those with powerful megaphones. The right generally preaches individual freedoms and choice whereas seemingly everyone else acknowledges collective responsibility.
If all these views are red-blue correlated, then it would be no surprise. But there are pronounced exceptions. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a non-scientist, is perhaps the most well-known anti-COVID vaccine activist. He questions the science, and people follow him, etc. The same can be said for football and basketball greats, Aaron Rodgers and Kyrie Irving. They are not exactly akin to the pillow guy, but curiously, on this topic, they end up as strange bedfellows.
All of us have family and/or friends who are on opposite sides of these crises and it is disturbing what this has led to: family breakups, strained relationships and the defriending of friends in real life and on social media. In the past two years, social media has become our substitute reality, with little face-to-face contact, and this definitely has altered how we as human beings treat each other.
The end of the world and human extinction are a tad more important than human relations, yet one can argue that our human relationships are as important, because often, our lives do indeed depend on them. Perhaps it simply calls upon us to think deep before severing ties with our own families and friends.

Los seres humanos reaccionamos de diferentes maneras durante una crisis, de manera similar a cómo cada uno de nosotros reacciona de manera diferente ante la muerte. Tales eventos sacan lo mejor y lo peor de nosotros. Más aún cuando se enfrentan a múltiples crisis. Podemos ver esto con COVID y el conflicto de Ucrania.
Sin embargo, ¿qué pasa con la amenaza de extinción? COVID no amenaza la existencia humana, pero ha habido 500 millones de casos y 6 millones de muertes en todo el mundo. Todo esto de un enemigo invisible. Contrariamente a la intuición, parece que solo China lo ha contenido, toda una hazaña para una nación que fue satanizada por supuestamente difundirlo intencionalmente a todo el mundo por parte del ex presidente de los EE. UU.
Sin embargo, la guerra entre naciones con armas nucleares amenaza absolutamente la existencia humana, especialmente cuando locos están al mando de las naciones. El ex presidente de EE. UU. encaja fácilmente en esa categoría, mientras que el ruso Putin probablemente también califique, no debido a un desequilibrio mental, sino más bien a un ansia de poder ego-maníaca.
Probablemente no se hayan utilizado armas nucleares, solo porque quienes rodean a estos dos probablemente eran / son un poco más razonables, no dispuestos a ser cómplices de la destrucción de la humanidad. Ambos, por cierto, han hecho este tipo de amenazas.
Pero, ¿qué pasa con la extinción a través del cambio climático? A pesar de la abrumadora evidencia, muchos de los seguidores del ex-presidente continúan creyendo que, mágicamente, de alguna manera se producirá una gran reversión a través de la limpieza de la naturaleza. O que habrá una extinción en la que solo sobrevivirán los fieles o los fuertes.
Todos tenemos derecho a nuestras creencias y este dictamen está a la vista durante estos tiempos. En una era diferente, todos estaríamos impactados por las creencias sin sentido que aparentemente se han convertido en la norma política hoy en día. Uno espera ideas locas del ex-presidente, pero no se limitan a él y sus seguidores.
En estos tiempos aparentemente confusos, es una apuesta segura que si el loco ex-presidente está a favor de algo, entonces el segmento más razonable de la sociedad está en contra. Esta no siempre es la lógica más segura porque uno también podría encontrarse del mismo lado que los traficantes de guerra que invadieron Irak ilegalmente. Pero en este caso, después de consolar a Putin con efusivos elogios, el ex-presidente insinuó” que el uso de armas nucleares puede acabar con la invasión. De todos modos, todavía muestra admiración por Putin. Eso explica fácilmente por qué muchos de sus secuaces también apoyan la invasión.
A pesar de esto, algunas personas han afirmado que Putin es un pacificador mundial. Otros invocan la idea de que Estados Unidos ha llevado a cabo [al menos] 33 invasiones desde la Segunda Guerra Mundial, por lo que Rusia también tiene derecho a 33 propias invasiones? La apología ha venido de sectores inesperados, aunque al menos son una minoría.
Es prácticamente la misma ecuación cuando se trata del cambio climático. La ONU emitió recientemente un informe que indica que el clima está a punto de empeorar y ser mucho más letal, especialmente dentro de 18 años. Los incendios forestales se agravarán, al igual que el calor extremo, las inundaciones, las sequías y el hambre y las enfermedades serán más mortales, que afectarán a los más pobres y vulnerables, aunque afectarán a todo el planeta ya toda la humanidad.
Y, sin embargo, los miembros de la sociedad de la tierra plana, la mayoría de ellos miembros del Partido Republicano y seguidores fanáticos del ex-presidente, continúan creyendo que el cambio climático no es más que un engaño.
Y luego está el COVID, que se ha convertido principalmente en una enfermedad republicana. Es decir, los condados que votaron por el ex-presidente han sido los más afectados por el COVID, principalmente porque la vacilación de las vacunas es mayor entre sus seguidores, especialmente aquellos con megáfonos potentes. La derecha generalmente predica las libertades individuales y la elección [de aceptar o no la vacuna], mientras que aparentemente todos los demás reconocen la responsabilidad colectiva [para eliminar Covid]?
Si todas estas vistas están correlacionadas con la política Republicana-Demócrata, entonces no sería una sorpresa. Pero hay excepciones pronunciadas. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., que no es científico, es quizás el activista más conocido contra las vacunas contra el COVID. Cuestiona la ciencia y la gente lo sigue, etc. Lo mismo puede decirse de los grandes del fútbol y el baloncesto, Aaron Rodgers y Kyrie Irving. No son exactamente parecidos al chico de las almohadas [“pillow guy”], pero curiosamente, en este tema, terminan como extraños compañeros de cama.
Todos tenemos familiares y/o amigos que están en lados opuestos de estas crisis y es inquietante lo que esto ha llevado: rupturas familiares, relaciones tensas y la eliminación de amigos en la vida real y en las redes sociales. En los últimos 2 años, las redes sociales se han convertido en nuestra realidad sustituta, con poco contacto cara a cara, y esto definitivamente ha alterado la forma en que los seres humanos nos tratamos entre nosotros.
El fin del mundo y la extinción humana son un poco más importantes que las relaciones humanas, sin embargo, se puede argumentar que nuestras relaciones humanas son tan importantes porque muchas veces, nuestras vidas realmente dependen de ellas. Tal vez simplemente nos llame a pensar profundamente antes de cortar los lazos con nuestras propias familias y amigas y amigos.
